I've heard of some crappy Paypal scams - I use EMT now or I don't ship.
Has anyone sold a bike via mail?
I used to sell bikes COD, have used paypal to the states. Works ok.
I've been buying lots of gun stuff, EMT seems to be the standard.

Unless you are stupid enough to believe fake PayPal payment emails there is no scam. PayPal is very safe.
Send the buyer a paypal invoice, wait for payment, when payment clears ship the bike. Make sure to get a quote for shipping (Purolator had the best price to the US) and include that cost on your paypal invoice. I've sold two frames like this, one to a guy in Colorado another to a guy in Whistler. Also bought a used frame and a set of wheels the same way. No issues.

You make the buyer do Electronic Money Transfers? There is absolutely no security in doing that. Wow.

They are out there. The buyer can be buying with a stolen credit card. Cc company charges back PayPal and PayPal takes from your account.
PayPal also usually sides towards the buyer's side in the event of a dispute. So as a seller, it doesn't take too much for you to lose out on eating the cost of shipping in the event of a returned item

Wow. Please explain why not. Wow. A simple email is given. Wow. Click on email, type in password, money is in my account. Wow. Sender has no right to know my banking info and bank will not reverse charges. Wow.

I think he was referring to buyer protection not transaction security. Although I could be mistaken.
I would not buy something from a seller who insists on using EMT only. It's really no different from Western Union from the buyer's protection point of view

Other than face-to-face and cash-in-hand - is there and buyer protection? I think its naive to believe that there is any form of online protection. EMT eliminates you losing your money - good for the seller.

Not entirely true. I have had a dispute using PayPal that saved me when an item didn't show up. It took some time to resolve but worked out in my favour.
I once sold a frame to a guy from the states on Pinkbike, I was super thorough taking pictures, estimated the shipping weight/cost as best I could my using the Canada Post shipping calculator and he agreed to pay me via bank transfer before I shipped the frame.
Everything was going well until he recieved the frame and realized I had over-estimated the shipping cost by $19 or something ridiculous like that. I mean really, $19 fucking dollars…my measurement was probably off by an inch or the weight of the box was heavier than I expected.
Anyways, buddy proceeded to email me and threaten my life several times for "ripping him off", caused a big commotion, threatened to ruin my life by making accusations of all sorts online. Generally a total, absolute fucking pain in the ass that wasn't worth the hassle in the least bit.
Moral of the story? I don't do business with Americans any more. I happily reimbursed him the $19, explained that such a small amount of money is trivial then told him to shove his fist up his own asshole.

Sounds like a very happy person… unfortunately sometimes you have to take one on the chin. I had a guy who bought a carbon frame off me who several months later found a crack, and tried to contact me to assess blame on me… I laughed.

And the buyer? I put the money in your account, and what assurance/insurance do I have that you will send me the item? Paypal covers the buyer and seller. No way I would ever use EMT.

Correct. Zero buyer protection using EMT.
