I do have a friend that had his 36's sheer at the headtube with not so good of an outcome. If I were you I would replace the uppers to be on the safe side.

I'm the best at being modest !

I'm not worried about it, its just the last thing I need is the steerer shearing off and sending me full scorpion. I love mountain biking, but cannot afford another injury.

My friend is now a quadriplegic because of this exact thing. His Fox 36's steer tube sheared off just above the race, drove his head straight to the ground and broke his neck. Now I wear a Leatt and do not ride single crowns other than on XC bikes.

Safe riding.

Under what circumstances?

$400 for a new steerer/crown unit.

Guess its minor if it prevent's an injury. Gah, now I'm worried.

Sorry about your friend, that's terrible.

He is a great guy and his life is awesome now even though he is in a chair, life is what you make it and he is a big inspiration.

Anyways, I'm sure you can find a new CSU for cheaper if you look around. And like you say it is minor cost if it prevents injury. That is how I look at the Leatt brace, I may never "use" it, but if I need it, it's there.

If it's just a creak, then it's likely fine. Take it in to SWerx and have James look it over for peace of mind.
