GX Eagle - Will you be upgrading?
I'm pretty happy to see a 12 speed drive train at a reasonable price. I'm starting to get into bikepacking so the extra range could be nice if I built another bike.
Are you sure you'd go 12-spd for bikepacking?
If I was building something just for it, I'd go with the old GX 11spd double (36/24 with 10-42) to get cliff-climbing gears...
I agree, it seems like a 2x10 or 2x11 is the way to go for the most range.

To be honest I didn't even consider going with a 2x set up. I must be so used to 1x that my mind immediately goes there. I did my last trip with my current 1x (32x 11-42) and it seemed fine, but it was only two days. I could see how the wider gearing could be nice on a much longer trip. I even have an old 2x10 set up sitting in my garage.

How about a 2x10 with a wide range cassette? E.g. the sunrace 11-40?

The Sunrace is an option too. I haven't seen one in person so I'm not sure how they shift or what the build quality is like but the reviews seem to be mostly positive. Pairing that with my 10 speed parts seems like a low cost wide range drivetrain.

For 29er maybe, but for 650b sunrace 11-42 cassete is everything I need.
I agree with house. I never feel the need for a 50T. At that point just walk. Maybe if I lived in Colorado I'd consider it but probably not. The biggest thing would seem to be the chainline issue but I have that sorted out on my Kona. That's the bike with the most speeds at 11. I haven't felt a need to upgrade. Honestly, I don't much care for SRAM shifting. I prefer the double release downshift of Shimano and the ability to dump gears faster.
Agree, Even if you are out spinning your legs you wont even need the 50T. Realistically if you get Eagle you go up a chain ring size to compensate for the 50T. IF you are riding in big alps then I could see it being used. I am perfectly happy with my X01 11 speed. 98% of the time I don't even use the top 2 gears. even in a race situation I don't see it being used, you aren't going that slow anyway.

What's Colorado got to do with it? Grew up/lived there for 25 years, genuinely curious.... Colorado is generally not that steep. Not Cascade/Coast Mountains steep, at least.
I went with a 1x10 system based on price. Was considering the eagle 1x11 but for a weekend Rider like myself there's too many other upgrades pending to blow too much $ on the newest drivetrain
There is no air in Colorado. The stuff I rode in Durango was not that steep but unless your acclimated the thin air of altitude makes a low low gear a good thing.
