its this year's water bottle mount

A crown mounted fender would look ridiculous and weigh too much for a weight weenie fork. Basically you'd need an MX fender which is ginormous! At least with DVO's DH fork you can put the crown to arch flap on it.

And yes boom, waterbottle bosses are important. Always have been (and not the bottom of the downtube version which are a recipe for downtube damage).

I'm curious as two why this is a recipe for downtube damage.

We’re assuming that since it is pictured with a hub that it might use a proprietary hub and axle

interesting… maybe they had to bump up the axle diameter to compensate for flexiness of the inverted design… around 5mm would probably do it ;)

So that would mean the 20mm axle is back in vogue?

My guess is that they'll go imperial - 3/4" axle (19mm).

Hitting a decent sized log crossing with your cage and bottle hanging down will try to tear the frame bosses from the downtube. I've seen it happen and it wrecked the bosses and destroyed the frame resale value (frame was still rideable though).

Also, this is an awful spot because of the debris that gets flung from the front tire.

Since they are going retro with the RS-1 model designation, they could continue with the Paul Turner theme and go with a 24 mm hub

You seriously think they're only coming on S-Works bikes!? I hate to be the bearer of bad news but they will be available aftermarket and on many OE bikes. Yes, they'll be expensive but that doesn't mean that they won't be used on muddy or rainy days.

No, I don't think that the Big S will have exclusivity on the RS1. I was just using that as an example because of the previous picture showing an SWorks with an RS1. I'm sure it will be spec'ed on other brands and also sold as a pricy aftermarket fork. But I think you will be one of only a handful of ppl that will write this XC fork off because of the oversight of a fender mount. By the sounds of it, you wont be RS1's target market and I don't think it will hurt their sales.
