Getting back into riding: use old bike or get new?

I think your 2007 bike will be retired shortly. I wouldn't invest a dime in it. Sourcing heavier springs? You got to be crazy. I agree with the guys that say just go out and ride it but there is no doubt that as soon as you see someone cruse by on a long travel 29er (up and down) you will be dipping into your savings to buy your new rig.

You won't notice much just riding alone but swap your 26'er for a friends 29'er to see the difference and I wouldnt invest any money in the old bike

Ride it, I'm still riding my Stiffe everywhere and I don't notice I'm having any less fun than the fashion queens on their carbon toys.

good point we are supposed to be doing this for fun and riding them wagon wheel bikes is more fun than yelling at kids to get off my lawn

Bikes are so good right now you'll be wondering why you didn't get one sooner. I can't say enough good about a modern bike, especially a 29er. Old bikes are terrible. Even if your memories of riding are good, those bikes still suck. Buy a used modern bike.

The new alloy Capra is an incredible bike at any price.

Thanks for the input everyone, I did a tour around my neighborhood and got my suspension dialed in a bit better.  We just moved to BC and had another crotchgoblin so money is tight right now, I am going to ride it as is and save up for a new ride. I am however splurging on a new seat as the old one is pretty horrific on my delicate under-bits.

Actually, I agree with you. Except that I still would stress not investing any $$ in his old rig. I agree he will likely have lots of fun riding whatever he's got but if on a limited budget, a new rig would be a much better use of money. Any modern day 1x11 drivetrain is soooo much better than the best 2 or 3x10 out there in 2007. The drivetrain alone would be worth getting a new ride and his old rig probably has old spacing that won't fit anything modern. I think anyone would be happier spending 2800 on this thing than $1500 upgrading an old beast. My 2 cents.
