I usually run minion 2.5 dual ply tires, but the trend seems to be to go light these days. I'm thinking of trying 2.1 or 2.35 single ply tires on 28mm rims. And brand or compound recommendations? Will I just get a bunch of flats? How much will grip be compromised?

trends schmends. narrow tires on wide rims is a bad combo ime: i ran a set of 2.35 minions on sun singletracks (31mm wide) and it SUCKED! why not get a set of exo 2.5 minions, save yourself what 500 grams/tire without losing traction and cush?

Just to piss you off I'm going to put a set of 1.8 pinner xc tires on my flows. Yeah…I'm sick like that.

Wrong. Always.

If you want to save weight but dont wanna loose traction like was said the Minion exo, they only come in fronts but I would take a sloggy tire that doesnt climb super well over have shitty traction on the down specially for our wet conditions.

If you want a even lighter tire that has very good traction on the down but also climbs very well I have found the Schwalbe fat albert front and nobby nic rear run really well. I also personally really like a muddy mary front and fat albert rear as well.

Single ply minions on 721's and I've had good luck. I also ride Fromme on my hardtail with 2.4 Conti Trail Kings on 721's as well. Both greaet tires.

Are the single ply minions sturdy enough for jumps, drops, etc? I'd like to try a set for the weight savings, but have heard a couple of blowout horror stories.

Yes there sturdy for jumps and drops ect…But I wouldnt run them in the bike park. I had a set on a Spitfire for a year and now on a Covert and im 240 pounds of pure hack I generally run about 28-33 psi . Some people get mad because they flat all the time, if you dont run super low psi on them and keep on it there good to go, the nice thing with dual ply minnion is you can run whatever psi tickles your fancy.

All depends on what and how you ride Fromme.

Some people go for the most pinner light tires that they can survive not flatting on. Some people want the fattest tire they are happy to pedal and push up.

Are you looking for xc/trail/am/xtc speed or dh/fr burl?

Winter time on the little bike. 2.35 42a minions.

Only use these when its wet and you need the grip because they roll so slowly it feels like you're peddling in molasses.

Specialized also makes some good tires. Butcher sx, clutch sx and clutch control are all worth looking at depending on how beefy of a tire you're looking for.

I'd say it would be AM/FR type riding.
I think I will try a set, as I never run less than 30psi, so it sounds like they will work fine.
