FORKING Forks

Hey Guys

I'm looking for some feedback about forks.

I've been running Fox 36 RC2 forks for about 8 years now, Talas's, Floats and the van 180. I like the adjustablity(or at least I think I do).

Anyway I'm getting ready to switch to 27.5 and I'm thinking about looking at other fork options.

The only thing I'm standing by is it needs to be travel adjustable on the fly.

Should I stick with the RC2's, go to the CTD cart or should I look at another brand?

I'm looking for educated advice if you get my drift.

Thanks

Pike? Seems to be the answer for the CTD blues, you can always go fox 36 650b without CTD or bos, Marzocchi 350 seems to be the a cool option.

I'm riding a 2008/09 Fox 36 RC2 and a 2013/14 Pike. RC2 is more adjustable, but I prefer the Pike's charger damper for my riding. I hear the new Float 36 is nice so if you like Fox it would be worth a look.

Whatever you do skip CTD.

My 36 Float Factory 27.5 170mm was a few hairs over 2000g. Can't remember the exact weight but it is a fair bit lighter than my 2014 34 Talas Factory 29er.

ok some real world weights, thnx..

2000g divided by 454 is 4.4 lbs….the pike rct3 160 mm is claimed weight of 1835 grams..4.04 lbs…pretty close there actually…

are the new 36's back up to snuff is the question? the 20 mm axle is a nice option..the 2013 fox offerings left me with a bad taste in my mouth..

my marz 55 ta (plushest of all time while still climbable) was 2300 grams waaaaaay too heavy…cmon marz!!!!

The 350CR is 2040g, and the NCR is just over 1900g. Timmigrant just got the CR, and he seems to love the hell out of it.

I currently have a Formula 35 and previously had a BOS Deville… while both are a bit exotic they are stellar performers and have both been very reliable. I would stack them up against a Pike without hesitation. The Formula 35 is lighter than the Pike as well. The new 2015 Fox 36 peaks my interest and from what I am hearing it is a step up for the platform.

After ten years on Fox I'm pretty much done with them. They were the most sophisticated option for a long time but my current RP2 is shit and the last fork I had sucked. My earlier Fox forks and shocks were really great - super robust chassis with guts that needed a fair amount of tuning to ride right (but at least that was possible).

I'm on an early Pike and it's been awesome right out of the box. Lots of progression, adjustments that work and it rides nice and high in its travel - all things my Fox products needed a lot of coaxing to deliver. Once I swap my RP2 for a DBA my time with Fox will be over.

yea i saw that. only in 650b you say? pity.. depending on adjustability that just might warrant a serious look…

if marz could get the plush adjustability of the 55 ta but with a decent weight (for nerdy climbers) that would be the winner winner chicken dinner for the free trail / enduro riders out there..:)

I'm a picky bastard and I'm really impressed with the new 36 Float Factory on my new Nomad. In the last few years I've tried out a whack of different forks and this is the best of the bunch IMO (888 on my V10 is also at the top of my list) and really toiled over fork choice for the Nomad. I went straight from a Pike on my E29 to the 36 on my Nomad and I think the 36 is a better fork for hard hitting AM use. It matches the burliness and use of the bike perfectly with a stiffer chassis than the Pike, great compression damping and more adjustability. With the RC2 you get much better traction, great mid stroke support and you can dial it from XC firm to California cruising soft using the low speed and high speed compression.

The Pike is an excellent fork but it doesn't have the range of adjustability, suppleness or chassis stiffness that the 36 has. To me, this pushes the Pike into the heavy duty XC and AM categories with its lighter weight, limited adjustability and lockout. The Pike definitely has a better rebound circuit though. It comes out of those big hits a bit more composed.

Fox has upped their game with the 36 for sure. I have no experience with the rest of their 2015 lineup though (32 and 34). The 2103 forks were bloody awful and the 2014 were a big improvement so hoepfully the 2015 models will be close to Pikey goodness.

BTW, I've ridden the new Talas 36 back to back with my Float on my Nomad and it is excellent also. Stiction in the Talas system is not noticeable and again, the RC2 damper is awesome. So supple and controlled.

CTD = Suck

I prefer my 2015 Fox 36 RC2 170mm in comparison to the Pike solo air. Not gonna get into great detail other than I like it much better.

I put my Pike back on for 2 rides just to be sure and I was very disenchanted with the Pike ; however, I do have to disclose that I'm biased towards the 170mm vs 160mm for my 2015 Nomad.

The RC2's are the real deal

FYI…my Pike is for sale for $ 700.00 - used for 90 days

So what if you could get a 170mm Pike?

X Fusion Metric set at 163mm. It has a 20mm axle, crazy stiff chassis, excellent damping, air bleeders, very supple yet very progressive, low pressure/large volume chamber, and less expensive than most forks in that class. Sorry I'm a little biased but I love this fork.
