fanny-pack / hip pack

Ok, so I do not like riding with a backpack...phew I said it.  However, I'm also not a fan of riding with shitloads of stuff (levers, CO2, first aid kid, phone, tool, granola bars, etc.) stuffed into my pants. I'm going to bite the bullet and look into a hip-pack.

I'd like something low-profile that can hold those minor items mentioned above, and also an extra bottle. I like the style that fits under the jersey, and doesn't look like something out of the early 90s.

I was thinking the new Bontrager one looks interesting - has anyone put their hands on one or know where to find one on the Shore? Otherwise, what others should I be looking at?

High Above Hand made buy a real nice guy in Bellingham. Top quality workmanship. Perhaps a bit retro for you, but check out the offerings on his site. I have his first generation Rad packed it is very low profile, fit's under a shirt. I also have their newer gen with a bit more space and a ventilated back (also takes a bottle). Fits very well, no budge as they are designed not being very deep in profile. If anybody has a dakine with a bladder you'll know how floppy they are;)

Fits a ton of stuff - I usually carry a pump, levers, patch kit, multi-tool, jacket and several clif-bars, with room to spare.  Only complaints - the straps dig into my waist a bit, also wish it was a hair smaller/lighter.  Prior to this, I was actually rocking a Dollarama fannypack which cost me $3.  That thing was mint, lasted a full season, more comfortable than the MEC one with similar capacity.  Alas, the strap started to tear, and my local Dollarama was unable to acquire a new one for me....   Should have bought 3 or 4 of them for that price!

I use the Bontrager one for my shorter rides, It fits my multi tools, tire levers etc.... in one side, my cell phone, keys & clif bar in the other and extra water in the middle. The buckle is solid, the stretchy fabric fits snug to the body and the strap is wide enough to displace the load for a solid feel. Don't feel it too much when I'm riding, occasionally on really chattery sections with a full bottle. Overall I find it quite right for the shorter trail rides.

Where did you find the Bontrager one? The other on my list is the "Dakine hot-lap" which I found at a local shop on North Van.

I did see the MEC one and thought that it was a bit too bulky for my liking.

I checked with my local Caps and they can order them in , I think any shop that deals Trek has a good line up of Bontrager stuff .

Speaking of MEC I have one of their packs , holds a bottle on each side and is a solid pack for the $30 or so I spent .

Since then I switched to the newer Camel back model so I can carry a bladder for spots I take my dogs with little trail side water . One issue with the Camel back is the straps slip , so I stole the adjusting locks for the belts off the MEC pack and that helped the issue . The newest version of the Camel Back has better waist straps and buckle so I guess they had complaints .

I couldn't find anything like those packs at the time, so I picked up a molle style "butt-pack" from the army surplus store. It has a ton of useful compartments, big enough for anything I want to pack for a full day.

It also has a large exterior set of straps so I can carry elbow and knee pads on it. Add this to the race strap under my saddle and I'm backpack free for most big rides.

Has anyone laid eyes on the Bontrager Rapid Pack? I've called around and it sounds like everyone has them on back-order. Just wondering if its worth a wait.

High Above out of Bellingham has some nice packs as well , been looking at there stuff . It looks better suited to our wetter climate with seam sealed zippers and the fabric they use .

They have 3 different sizes and have the option to carry water bottles , but no bladder type system .

Leatt has one as well , anyone know of any shops that stock Leatt clothing ?? noticed some nice shorts and jerseys .

I just got a hella good deal at sportscheck on the Dakine fanny pack....reminds me of the 80's. Have yet to ride it, but am looking forward to it.
