drilling out 321's

My old 321s developed small cracks at the valve hole after being drilled out for shrader. To be honest it never really affected anything though, I still rode the rims without problems for a couple seasons until that bike got stolen. That being said if I had a new set of those rims I wouldn't do it. What's wrong with presta?

On a related note, the new 729s come shrader drilled with a plastic adapter for presta. These don't seem to crack and I think it's for the reason LIPS stated.

i drilled out several d321's, who ever told ya that youd have problems is a knob. how do you think the original hole got there?
watch your drill speed and use coolant/cutting fluid. dont drill like a hack and you'll be fine.

Just drill it out. Its not brain surgery. I've done it alot, even XC rims back in the day. Never, never a problem after. Just make sure you use a little emery cloth to take the burrs off after.

Yes it will work no prob. A 21/64" Drill bit from the hardware store is the legit size. 5/16" works though.

Its perfectly fine. I mean, how do you think that hole got there in the first place?

You've been mimed alot on that statement.

I've used a file to make the hole bigger. Didn't have a problem.

Hang on a minute. Since when did Mavic need to be drilled for schraeder? Every Mavic rim I have had in recent memmory came with a schraeder sized hole and a plastic grommet for presta use?

But if not drill or ream or round file a larger hole. Won't harm the rim.

Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.

ive drilled out mine…

no problem

i ddint even use the right drill bit, a smaller one and reamed it out a bit by drilling on angles…

works fine…

its not exactrly rocket surgery to drill out a rim, cant see why it would crack…

its a fricking bicycle, not the space shuttle. Go grab a cordless drill and do it. They make 321's with the larger hole, there is no difference. Drill it and give'er.

Are you talking "rocket science" or "brain surgery" here?

Simon, I feel pretty confident in saying, yes, you should drill them out.

Buy my damn bike.

the easiest way is to go to you bike store and buy a shraeder adapter for all of one dollar and continue running presta tubes.
