Downtube & chainstay protectors?

Is there any decent alternative to using an old tube? (home made or in stores)

I don't mind making my own chainstay protector, but i think an old tire/tube strapped to one's downtube looks rather… ghetto. :P
I think the best thing would be some sort of clear plastic/tape protection (3M?) for the downtube.

As for the chainstay, I don't really care what it looks like, but I want something that makes the bike as silent as possible. I tried zip-tie'ing an old DH tube to my chainstay, but it had a tendency to twist and interfere with the cranks.

The best thing I can thing of would be to get some of that clear plastic hose from a hardware store, and put that over the chainstay. However, I'd like to do it without zip ties, since it would be no better functionally than a tube.

Does anyone have any creative ideas that have worked out for them?

Is it really worth shelling out for those THE downtube and chainstay protectors? I've had a THE fender in the past, and it wasn't exactly worth $60.

stops chips if you have weak paint… or if you like form over function.

i have never to this day seen any modern dh/fr bike with a dent in the downtube.

I don't see a point in armouring up your whole bike. it's like "it's to make my paint look good" but all that armous looks ugly, and covers up all the nice beautiful paint. Seems really weird to me…

It's not only the paint, like I dent my old Trek on the downtube.

Those chain stay ones aren't great unless they're plastic. my brother has a neoprene one that just got shredded fast.

If you go to a motorcycle shop you can get clear plastic sheets a bit larger than 8 x 11. I think they called it macktack. Its thick stuff that motocross guys put over their stickers to proctect them. It's clear so you can still see the paint and it seems thick enough to stop cable rub and you can pull it off when you sell. $10 a sheet

I use the Roach one, they work pretty good. Just that oil soaks in and gets dirty easily. Plastics are easier to wash. I used to have THE plastic chainstay protector. It's plastic it protects the chainstay from paint chips alright, but it still makes noise. I prefer the neoprene ones because they are soft and silent. Mine Roach one didn't get shredded. I bought it for around $11 CND.
