I have a friend who is looking for a new/used bike sub 3000 dollars. He sat on a 08 demo 7 size large and that felt about right, but he's looking for a 8"+ rear travel frame, he won't be pedalling up hill much only pushing…. Any suggestions?

if its new sub 3 grand, if its used around 2 or less.

The new norcos are WAY too short.

he's 6'0 tall and about 200 pounds solid

A little longer stem? Top tube is relative anyway, how much of your riding is accomplished while sitting down on the seat?

I'm 6'0 over 200lbs and a medium sunday was great geo.

I guess top tube is relative to a point, but I know for a fact that I have a very hard time riding anything with less than a 24" effective TT. I rode a large Faith (23.5" ett) but had to run at least a 75mm stem to get it even close to rideable. Even then I was bashing my knees on the upper crowns of the fork.

That having been said, the bikes that I have found to be sort of ok include:
Specialzed Demo
SC VP Free (XL)
Giant Glory (L) - way above price limit though
IH Sunday
IH Yakuza Kumicho (not made any more)
Mongoose ECD (2008)/Boot'r/Pinn'r
Transition Blindside (just felt bigger than the numbers suggested)
Giant Faith (XL)

Good luck!

Pre-2008 Wilson size L has a 616mm TT … one for sale in your price range

Current V10 size L is even longer… 630mm.

Another thing your friend should consider is the length from bb to front axle. Don't bother with a longer stem to compensate as it will negatively effect your handling except for tight corners. basically a short stem will make it twitchy and too far forward. Also with a shorter stem you can roll the handlebars forward slightly which I personally find gives the bike better handling.

Demo's have a relatively huge front center so if he can't fit on a large Demo he's taller than 6ft ! As others have said forget about the toptube length, it means nothing.

since demo 7, can increase it's travel to 7.8/7.5 by removing the bumper, you should tell your friend to get the demo.

Aside from that, if you set your suspension right, a 7 can outperform a bad 8" design(assuming you are compromising performance for longer top tube)

A demo 8?

X2, I'm 6-0 and 195 and my medium demo 8 fits like a glove. Even climbing (which
I do a lot now) I never hit my bars, even with pads on. I'm sure the demo 7's
probably have a similar cockpit.

I am 6'5" with most of my height in my torso and I find the Demo's just too damn short for comfort- even a large. I have found the blindside and SX trail to be much more comfortable when you have a long torso.
