I've found craigslist has some amazing deals but you've got to be fairly savvy and patient. I've thought I missed that once in a lifetime deal and 2 days later there is a better one. Problem is the shear volume of crap. As you probably figured out there are deals but you have to do your homework. Pinkbike is actually a pretty good site to find quality bikes - you're not going to find that under-priced gem there though - like on NSMB - most know what they've got as well as a fair estimate of its worth - often a very good deal.

If you've got until fall I'd educate myself on CX bikes - starting now. The preferred method of purchase for bike dorks is to buy all the magazines, read all the reviews, analyze all the geometries and understand all the groupos… essentially have your dream bike visit you each night in your sleep - then compromise from here based on your budget - or go to a shop and buy what they tell you.
