Personally I'd look towards early nineties rather than buying a shitty old heap being passed off as 'vintage' on Craigslist. I sold an early Specialized Allez with a lugged carbon frame, 8sp 105 STI, dual pull brakes etc for around 350 IIRC, and that seemed a fair price to me, and the girl who bought it was stoked.
Most of the old stuff on CL is a joke, and then people have the nerve to charge even more after taking the gears off and sawing the handlebar in half!

Every bike that has an hipster appeal on CL is overpriced. But that doesnt really change the fact that I need a commuter bike.. So this is what i have to deal with. Im fully expecting to a) pay more than I want to; b) have to make upgrades on a bike thats already overpriced.

Get a 90s mtb, install slicks and fenders. Overpay for junk and you're no better than the hipsters you decry

Damn. 55.5cm is slightly short, but still in the ballpark; I have a brand new 120mm Nitto Pearl in the parts bin; and a decent catalog chromed-out 4130 unicrown fork is dirt cheap brand new from OCB if my other forks don't fit. HIGHLY tempting.
Pre-buyout Merlin was always way hotter than Litespeed, though, and this particular market has nowhere to go but down - as far as 1" head-tubed titanium road frames and canti-bossed MTB's go. They don't exactly make for practical all-weather commuters due to the lack of fender and disc brake mounts, and the geometry generally tends to be either wacky custom, slackassed TT/tri-specific, or old-school 71/73 MTB XC race stylz.

I'm looking at old hummer frames as well but $500ish seems a bit steep to me.
after several misses, i finally found something..
certainly not 'crazy vintage shizz' but it satisfies cheap and reliable (knock on wood) city commuter/cruiser criteria
