While they are great cranks for XC I wouldn't suggest the XTRs for what you're doing. They aren't designed for people who are breaking BBs. Plus, they won't take a bashguard.
CRANKS and BB?!

That, and new rings for the XTRs are really expensive. I mean prohibitively.
I run the newer XTs (x-type) and they've been trouble free, although they don't see a lot of drops or jumps. Other options include Race Face Atlas, Shimano Hone (cheap and strong), some used RaceFace North Shores (splined, should be cheap, decent), or something like the Truvativ Holzfellers.
Really depends on your riding style. If I was into freeride and cash were an issue, I'd probably go with the Hones. Easy to maintain and install too.
"It's, like, so much fun."
Just get some Hussefelts with the Howitzer BB. The Howitzer is basically the splined interface combined with external bearings…therefore, you should be able to run any similarly splined cranks on the Howitzer BB. I know the Bontrager Big Earl cranks work on there too. The whole kit would probably cost you substantially less than $200.
Looks like it would work with any ISIS cranks.

I'm happy to get outside and enjoy nature while I can, but I fear for the future of humanity
OK- somebody clarify this.
Is the Howitzer interface compatible with ISIS cranks or not. I thought it was its own deal and not compatible. I thought that if you want to keep your ISIS cranks, but go with an external bearing, FSA was the place to look (although the Mega-Exo ISIS BB might really screw up the whole Q factor thing).
^^^ i doubt this. even if the splined interface is the same the crank arms will be too far out.

Peachy-B is right. The Q-factor would be way off. The Howitzer BB is designed to work with specific cranks:
"Howitzer technology isn't designed to be retrofitted or used with other platforms, so you'll only be able to mate these BBs with 2006 and onwards cranks from Truvativ."
"The song of a bird…We used to ask Ennesson to do bird calls. He could do them. How he could do them, and when he perished, along with him went all those birds…"-Return from the Stars, Stanislaw Lem
"We just walk around, and sometimes we go out and dance, and then we listen to the environment."-Ralf Hutter, Kraftwerk
FSA Gap MegaExo…
what's the buzz on these cranks?

That's what I thought! Thanks.

i got my RF evolve DH's from Overtime for 45 bucks new, and a FSA bb for 75 at dizzy, but you can get them for cheaper…
Anyone in need of a band for christmas music this holiday season?
I think the Hones will be perfect for what you are looking for, cheap but still strong and reasonable in weight too.
I like my bike! its good.
I've gotten a lot of life out of my Hussefelts (I got em w/ my '01 p3 and they've been through many a drop on my Bullit since '03 and mine don't even have the pedal insterts like these do. Look at this price w/ rings and bash!:

This BB is hella cheap but I'd spring the extra bucks there and go w/ the next link's DH gigapipe:

And if you can get rings elsewhere, these are some tough cheap crankarms:
