Thoughts on the Cobalt AM wheels. There very cool looking but strong enough?
They look cool but you are putting yourself in the same situation as when you buy a set of Mavic or Industry Nine wheels.
What does a spoke cost to replace?
Who stocks spokes if you break one?
If you bend your rim what do ALL the spokes cost to replace?
The only person I know who has trashed a rim on an Industry Nine wheel chose to lace up their new rim with their old spokes (something that is generally considered un-smurfy) because of the expense of a wheel worth of I-9 spokes (Don't qoute me but I believe he said ~$160 just for spokes).
You cannot go wrong with a standard 32h wheelset. You will always be able to find spokes and nipples and rims for them, they are generally much less expensive, and you don't need to find a mechanic with special tools to work on them.
I would recommend:
Choose your hub based on price/use:
-XT/Hope/Hadley/Profile Racing/King/DT Swiss/Industry-9 (they make standard hubs too).
Choose your spokes based on price/use:
-Straight 14g, Butted 14/15g or 14/17g (Dt Swiss, Sapim, WSmith, Marwi) w/ brass nipples.
Choose your rim based on price/use:
-Mavic, Sun, Stans, Syncros, etc etc etc.

Bingo. Give the man a beer.
I've seen friends have to buy a new wheel on a road trip because some special Mavic spoke wasn't available.
If you are gunna spend the money go with industry nine. they work with any 32h rim and are insanely strong. i think pinkbike did a review on them(and so did i about a year ago.) and the guy at pinkbike ended up breaking 2 spokes and just left it to see what would happen. the wheel was fine.

Ive been on mine for about 2 years and no problems at all and ive beat the crap out of them.
heres the link to all the tech specs for the cobalts

That man does deserve a beer. After having to replace an entire road wheelset because of lack of parts, I'd have to say wheels using standard parts and spokes are the way to go.

Are you talking about the Iodine wheels and not the Cobalts? The cobalts look scary. The Iodines look scary too. Plus they are stupid expensive, even a lot more than I9. If I was to get any wheel that uses any sort of proprietary spokes it would be I9, at least you can use any rim and they ship with extra spokes.

But not enough to build up a fresh wheel.
If you crack a rim (it happens) are you going to build up you wheel with the same spokes or shell out for new ones?

Same spokes. Unless your definition of cracked is Tacoed. I don't think it's that big of a deal.
