buying a used frame from US&A

has anyone imported a used frame from a private purchase? i can't imagine shipping would be cheap but i'm concerned about it crossing the border and the bs fees and taxes that might ensue. man this whole exhange rate thing is really blowing goats when it comes to buying, oh, anything. like a Canucklehead economic beatdown.

It wold have to be a pretty good deal to make it worth your while. Like 20% cheaper than you could get here after exchange and shipping.

Best thing to do is use a mail service in Blaine or pt Roberts and go over and pick it up.

Bought 2 made in USA frames in the last 10yrs. Paid GST on one at customs, nothing on the other. Old Turner and the Chumba (brand new).

If it is used and second hand why the need to pay any duty? Just get it mailed on the other side of the border and go to Seattle for a weekend and bring it back.

You would still theoretically pay tax on that frame, used or new. There would be no duty though you are correct.

that much travel, fuel and time would add at least 300 to the price. if it can't be mailed to town i ain't buying.

If they ship usps, youll pay like $8 for brokerage and then gst on whatever bs low value you declare it at. Look up shipping costs snd ex rates online and there ya go

I bought my first V10 frame from a guy in Norcal. Had it mailed up here, shipping was only $50 or so, had to pay the brokerage fee + GST. All in it was C$1900 for a pretty much new frame. To this day that is probably my favorite DH bike I have owned.

Unless things have changed you should only have to pay duty on a complete bike or a complete wheelset, that used to be 6%. Not sure if this applies if goods are used. You should not have to pay duty on any other bike parts. It is worth knowing the customs tariff code for bike parts so you can educate customs brokers and CBP if need be.

I was reading about YT's launch into Canada on another bike site and folks there were claiming the duty on a new complete bicycle is 13%. From my searching it looks like it's 8% duty + 5% GST = 13%. Also not sure on the used/new thing.
