i had a similar failure on an XTR M970 hub a number of years back. I discovered the failure when I was taking the wheel off to try to diagnose a freehub that didn't quite sound right (had a sort of lopey buzz, if i remember right)
Riding with the broken axle had misaligned the guts of the freehub and wound up damaging it. So I had to replace the axle and the freehub body.
There's a pretty good chance the same could happen to your freehub if you continue to ride. You should probably inspect it before you put the new axle in.
