does brake fluid for cars work the same as the stuff you would buy from a bike shop? i was at the shed this weekend and couldnt stop at all brakes were way too spongey. im about to bleed them and have enough car fluid left and just wondering if it would work

surely it just depends on the fluid lype i.e dot 3 or 4 or whatever. if you get them right then you should be set

Yeah, deep penetration is pretty key. Unfortunately it can be hard to achieve, lubrication can definitely help in some cases.

not for shimano brakes though. They use mineral oil.

I'm pretty certain Dot 3 and 4 doesn't matter too much for Hayes.

I've used both in my Mags and have had no problems. They were, after all, Hayes.

3 and 4 is pretty much the same, just different boiling points, but that is no concern on a MTB. do yourself a favour and use fluid from an unopened bottom. brake fluid absorbs moisture, and moisture in your brakes is a no no

El Caminos are fussy too. Make sure you get a good bleed before you head back out on the trail. Take the caliper off your bike and rotate while tapping it with a non-scoring, hard object so you can be sure any air bubbles are out. If you haven't done it before, it might take a couple of tries before you get it.

FWIW, Hayes bleed kits include a bottle of DOT 4 fluid.
