bike crash 40mph

KindofDirt and I were hauling my bike back to my house on the roof of his civic, doing about 40mph, when my bike somehow fell off the roof. The bike for the most part is fine other then a few scratches. However; the brake lever pulled out of the (housing?). It looks like a piston with a ball joint on one end. The lever was hanging down when we picked it up off the road, and I pushed the ball back in the socket, it still stops the rear tire, but it will pull out if you eccidently push instead of pull the lever. EX, if I slip off the grips and push it forward a tad bit.

What should I do about that? Do I need a new lever? or the whole brake minus the lines and caliper?

Don't push it.

What brake? Avid Juicy's for example, have a break away mechanism like you described.

what you need for your Hayes brake is a small replacement part

its a new washer and circlip - when the levers pops out, they bend, and will continue to allow the lever to pop out, which can be very dangerous if blasting down a DH run or going along a skinny and having the lever suddenly pop loose = no brake

the parts are really inexpensive, but can be hard to track down, see you local Hayes dealer - they are installed with circlip pliers and take about 2 minutes to put in…

Zip Tie around the lever to the bar. That will keep in place.

Yeah get this done at your lbs. I've done the same to my Hayes 3-4 times by crashing while riding Fromme. It happens.

or you could pull the c-clip and take the washer down to the hardware store and match it up with a similar washer and just use that. Have done it a ton of times, works perfectly.

I just hammered the washer back into shape and put it back in. Worked fine.
