vs. Zooms:
Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM $734
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 $500
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 $824
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L $1550
Zoom has the convenience of one lens being able to get different shots. Auto focus works, while many of the cheaper prime options are manual only. But they are not as fast. You can get a collection of primes that cover a wider focal range for less $$. All 4 of the primes I want are about the same price as the sigma 24-70mm 2.8.

If you want to keep auto focus, and all canon lenses, three 1.8 primes= 28mm $470, 50mm $120, 85mm $390= $980

Baller fast= canon 50 1.4 $380, sigma 30 1.4 $490, canon 85 1.8 $390= $1270

I haven't used it in the woods, but I just bought a Canon 15-85 for a general walk around lens and I really love it. I was very close to the 24-70 but I worried about not getting the wide side of things. Now that I have the 15-85 I'm happy with my decision. We'll see how it does in low light though.
