my new favorite is the mavic charge 2.4. they're made for mavic by michelin and they've really nailed it. i've been riding one, along with the roam XL in the rear, for about a month. sidewall is burly, close to 2-ply, but more supple, similar to specialized SX casing, and only 900g for the 26" version. it rolls faster than HR2, minion, HD, but has some kind of magic rubber that gives it impressive traction in wet terrain, and it has hardly worn at all. reminds me a bit of continental's black chili rubber, but a bit stickier. the tread is magic - the transition gap is a bit tighter than HR2 so its a bit more forgiving on the transition to the side knobs for aggressive cornering. braking traction is outstanding, and it remains very predictable even on wet rock and roots. it is most similar to the butcher SX but faster rolling and better wearing. highly recommended, if you can find one.

I like the Butcher front Purgatory rear combo. Sometimes I think about going for something faster rolling for the rear in the summertime, but I'm pretty well sticking with Butcher on the front until something better comes along.

when you factor in price, the butchers are tough to beat. Tough to find sometimes too.

And weight for durability in the SX casing. Really like this as a front. Rear too, but you do feel a bit more rolling resistance.

That said, the Trail King 2.4 is the best of the bunch from Conti and that's what I've got sitting ready to replace my Butcher's when they are worn out, as I got a set for a great price. And they have less rolling resistance at a small cost in terms of slightly less confidence on high speed corners.

That new Charge is looking might tempting, but too rich for my blood right now.

Unless you race XC rolling resistance is a non factor. If you pedal up, lighter is better but never compromise performance on the down.

Minion DHF EXO 2.5 sticky

And bro, Hans Danf is easily the worst rubber I've ever rolled. Subjective of course.

Bontrager rubber is on the firm side in general. Good sidewalls and tread patterns. XR4 looks good but I'd guess it'll be a bit slippery for a winter tire.

I ride everything in the corridor. I like to pedal but am happiest descending challenging terrain.

Rolling resistance and weight adds up on a long ride, but traction comes first.

clarklewis thank you!

just bought conti trail king 2.4, i'll try them these days!!!

if i'm not satisfied, i'll get the mavic charger! i hope it is that good!!! it's a bit heavy though in comparison with hd and minion 2.3!! xr4 is light but as you said it may be a bit slippery, but everybody raves on how grippy it is, given how low rolling resistance it has.

so you have ridden in front, minion, hr2, hd and mavic charger is as much grippy but with less rolling resistance? is it also big volume?

have you tried any conti tyres?

20km of trail king 2.4 bliss todays. mixed conditions from loamy to dry, hardpack to loose.

trail kings grip confidently in just about everything.

rolling resistance, despite their 150g to hans dampf, is lower, they roll well even in tarmac.

i'll ride them more but i think they are here to stay!!!

i guess it's pretty obvious why continental keeps them in their exact form since 2007 (?)

I find most tires are pretty much all round…

I'm blown away with Minion DHR2 front and rear. TR 2.3 on my trail bike and DH 2.4 on my DH bike. A couple of friends have done the same and are just as impressed.
