Father's Day. Doing some bobsled laps with my son. Decided to put on the gas and show off to a group of kids in a Sunday lesson. Went around the wood berm on the top edge and then hit the next little booter. Tossed it sideways, came down a little sideways and SNAP, the rear axle breaks off, sending the wheel into the frame, sending me OTB, skidding padless along the trail. Lots of blood, swearing and walking the bike out ensued. Bobsled is teh gnar.

I've only ever snapped a rear axle on a beater road bike (freewheel hub).

Years ago there were issues with the Maxle light and certain hub combinations, I never experienced this directly though.

What kind of frame/hub/axle was it?

Ive broken a few qr's by landing like a hack and broken a few dropouts, but never snapped the axle.

But did the audience appreciate your effort?

At least you didn't do the same thing (minus the axle) in front of a trillion people at the Test of Metals.

luckily the audience didn't see that the last part as i went around the corner. My son sure did. I'm sure there's a lesson he learned in there somewhere. As far as axle, the bike's a 2011 GT Distortion with 12x135mm MAXLE THRU AXLE DROPOUT.

I've bent a front quick release axle.

I've broken a cheap rear axle by riding a bulged tire home. I've also stripped the splines on Deore cranks pulling that exact same move on Bobsled. Good times. :)

My son and his friend have both broken 142x12 rear axles on their Banshee Spitfires. They have made a design change since my son broke his so maybe it isn't an issue any more. We were so lucky it did not break while we were up riding in the Chilcotins for a week.

Hi I also ride gt distortion (custom build) but Im still using qr 145 with no problems. I have been thinking og switching to the 12mm axle as I have already got the dropouts and and axle , just need hub adapters..
Where did the axle break? I'd hate to switch to the 12mm only to have it snap on me..

I'll let you know GTDad. I haven't even really looked too much. My hand hurt so much i could barely move the wheel to get in and look. I think it snapped right at the frame on the left side (behind the cassette).

Right side. My bad. It's a maxle. In fact the maxle lever on the other side broke too and now the axle is stuck in the frame and half the hub. Fawk.
