^the wee short cage zee also handles this setup just fine.

pedalhound - think i'm going to give it a go as well (30t wolftooth w/ no guide + 11-36 + zee). boss cheapo xx1.

Yeah, I find the zee works great on a 32x11-36… maybe a little slack in the 11 but it's not a problem. A 30 tooth 104 bcd would be all i'd ever need.

While the advantages of single-ring definitely exist, it is nice to instantly drop into the granny ring when faced with that misplaced technical climb in the middle of a descent..

Yah I have some concerns about giving up that bail-out option too but I HATE my 3x9 so much and its crazy chain deflection I'm ready to make the change.

I thinking of using the Grip Shift iteration so grabbing a whack of cogs should be as simple as a fist full of twist.

Freedom of contract. We sell them guns that kill them; they sell us drugs that kill us.

Saying you can climb fromme with something isnt really saying much.

But yes, XX1 is nice. I'm surprised we haven't seen any shop rats on here show up with a setup. Do people not partake in weight weenieing anymore?

no doubt there will be trickle down for 2014 (ie, x9), as well as aftermarket options. you can already buy a standard crank compatible ring from wolf tooth, and raceface has a similar proto ring.

given my positive experience with a single ring 11-36 / zee derailleur setup, i find this (full range, single derailleur) concept really appealing. no doubt we'll see more iterations soon.

edit - neat - wolftooth has a 104 bcd 30t ring… paired with that 11-36 might be a killer (cheap) shimano alternative to xx1:

what ZEE derailleur are you using the M640 DH or FR ??

A thread full of replies and only one second hand account!

I bit the bullet last night and bought a group after reading the internets.. no major problems that I've read, just creaky noise issues so far.

I'll report back when I get it up and running.

Sweet hayzeus, who runs an 11-32 these days?! 1994 called and wants its cassette back.

Dammit man, my PG980 is 11-34!

srsly tho, I took the numbers off what I'm currently running in an effort to be able to climb with my all mountain bike. I'm running a 36t up front, but those new 40t Raceface units are sexy.

Im a little confused at how you came to your gear ratios, but my math might just suck.
10-spd with an 11-36T cassette and one of RaceFace's new narrow-wide 30T rings might be do-able as well?

I think my math is right. It's the rear gear divided by the drive gear.
So with a front cog 30t with an 11-36 should yield a ratio of;

11/30 = .36:1 and 36/30 = 1.2:1 for a range of .36-1.2:1
The 30t front really messes with your overall ratios. This setup tightens your gears compared to running an 11-32 with a 34t front. Imho, you're better off going with a larger drive gear over a smaller one. The longer lever should allow you to put more torque into each pedal stroke.

I recommend this cheap version….

Scrap the 11 speed cassette and derailer as this is where @ 60% of the cost is. Instead run a type 2 derailer (Sram X9 is the most affordable and takes weight into consideration) and your current 10 sp 11-36 cassette. Then buy XX1 carbon cranks (they are the most affordable carbon cranks ever) and buy a 30 tooth XX1 ring.

This set up gives all the granny gearing a 2x10 (24/36 by 11/36) would minus 24 x 10….your new granny as compared to the 2x 10 set up is a 24 x 9 which is plenty fine ….AND affordable, especially when your hub may not even marry up with 11 speed cassette.

Im confused. Why not just get a 30T 10 speed ring when they come out? No need for XX1 cranks….

This. This is basically what I'm running with my Saint Cranks, except a stock 9 speed 32t ring with no issues and great shifting. 2013 X-9 rear derailleur and 11-36 cassette. No need for the xx1 cranks unless you want the weight savings. And Saint cranks work so nicely with so many of the guides out there.
