Any options to stiffen the steerer tube on a Fox 36 fork?

I've had my 2019 Fox 36 Grip2 fork for around a year now and really love this fork, especially after adding a Vorsprung Lufkappe. It may not be the most supple fork ever, but the amount of control when launching at full speed into a rough, rocky, rooty descent or landing off a jump in this kind of terrain is next level.

Unfortunately this also exposes its biggest weakness IMHO; the the steerer tube and/or steerer tube to crown junction feels really flexy to me under 'full huck' conditions. To be fair, I'm kind of the engineering worst case nightmare: my riding weight is likely 230lbs plus, I'm running max travel of 170mm on a 29er fork with a head angle somewhere around 64 degrees.

I feel the flex most when turning on rough, steep downhills when it often results in creaking in the headset bearing interface. I can get rid of this creaking by over tightening the headset but then my bearings don't last long. I use to have around a 20mm spacer under a Renthal Apex stem and got rid of that for a 45degree high rise stem that I can clamp directly above the headset which definitely yielded an improvement in perceived rigidity but I'm still not happy. I'm wondering if there is some sort of insert you can get that goes inside your steerer to re-enforce it (Maybe some sort of dual collet arrangement? So far all I have been able to find is the Intend "Stiffmaster" headset but it sounds like it would not last long in PNW wet conditions. (I'm currently running a Cane Creek 40 headset).

Short of getting a dual crown fork, anyone have any ideas?

Get a Fox 36 E-Bike ready fork.

It has a not-hollow crown and thicker walled stanchions (Fox 34 air assembly is fitted therefore) and it also comes with a Grip2 damper.

It is supposedly made for the higher system weight of e-mtbs and speeds.

It is said to remedy the creaky CSU issues and is a lot stiffer.

I am thinking about getting one, because my forks always get creaky at some point, even though I am not heavy and I figure myself as a reasonably smooth rider.

Happened on several Pikes, a Lyrik and now also on three times on my 2018/19 Fox 36s...

Cane Creek Helm so far seems tough and steers tight even under duress. I'm 6'6", 220+ gear on a bike with a similarly slack head angle and 160mm travel on a 29er. The new DVO Onyx looks promising too.

Came here to say this. Mojo suspension was doing this.

Dual crowns have huge offsets unless you buy an aftermarket set of crowns or the Öhlins DH fork.

My CSU from my Fox 36 was replaced under warranty. Suspension Werks discovered that it was creaking and sent it to Fox. Apparently this is quite common with the Fox 36 forks, Fox is aware of the problem, but I was told it wouldn't be fixed until 2021???!!!! Why do they need to wait that long to remedy the problem?

Consider a DVO diamond. I'm a "bigger than average dude" aswell, and don't find that the DVO creaks/flexes at all compared to my old Fox.

That German maniac - who makes the upside down fork with no lower leg protection and the stem you need a spork to get your bars in - has a headset wedge that he claims stiffens up single crown forks by preloading the upper bearing as if you have a dual crown. Might be a cheap (er) option to try out.

Öhlins 36?

Faux and Rock Shit messed up big time with the massive offsets on their new dual crown forks. 49er=48mm offset. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Well, I'm sure you know all about the MORC 36 option coming (eventually, eventuallYy) from Mojo Rising/Geometron...

Xorrox - unrelated but how do you find the Luftkappe vs. stock Evol air spring on the 2019 36 Factory? I had a Luftkappe on my 2017 Pikes on my old bike and loved it... only have 2 days on my new 36 but other than needing to play with volume spacers a bit it feels pretty damn good (way better than the stock air spring on my old Pike did). Also a bigger dude (210-215ish riding weight), 160mm 65.5 HTA, stem clamped low, hopefully don't experience this issue on my fork.

Is that the dual crown reducers? Or the possible 36 dual crown? Might be difficult as they’re no longer the Faux UK people. Refresh my memory. Life outside of biking has gotten in the way over the past few years.

Adjustable offset crowns for Fox 40s plus allegedly a kit to convert 36s to similar.

^ There’s a company in the states that does 40 and Boxxer reduction crowns. I contacted them before I got my 44mm 36 29er. I was actually very interested in the Formula Nero R fork.

Like I’ve said; 49=58mm offset. 40 275=56mm.

Öhlins DH fork can be had with 46mm offset in various travel. I pondered the ~180mm version.

Anyway I wait for someone to make a dual crown 36 or similar
