What the hell is the difference!!

Maxxis website isn't exactly helpful

I'm looking to replace the Minnions on my 'big' bike, used almost exclusively on the Shore but with the occasional bike park day (Whistler, Sun Peaks or SS).

Currently, I've got a Super Tacky on the front and a 3C on the rear

Seems the 3C's are ~$90 whereas the Super Tacky are ~$70. Though I can get both substantially cheaper thru Chain Reaction (and I have to put in a CRC order for something not available over here anyway)

Super tacky is made up of only the softest compound and wears out fast whereas the 3C(ompound) has the stickiest down the middle I believe, the midgrade compound down the sides or the other way around and the 60a (hardest) makes up the casing. Go with the 3c for the perfect balance of durability and traction.

I just bought a set of the 2.5 Minion DHF 3C from Overtime Sports in Coquitlam for $70 each, which is a real good price. I asked what the 3C was, and was told that 3C is for triple compound. From what I understand, the tire uses different compounds of rubber in different areas of the tire. So where it needs to be stiffer it uses one compound, and where it needs to be softer it uses another. This is supposed to prolong the life of the tire. I could be totally wrong though.

I went for a ride at the Woodlot over the weekend and they felt great, lots of grip in the corners.

The best explanation is here (Maxxpro core / Super Tacky centre knobs / Slow Reezay side knobs):

Although these days there are now different '3C' styles.

I've got a set of EXXO 3C and they are barely sticky at all. I've got an older set of 2-ply's and they're basically made out of glue =/

I definitely feel the same way. From my limited time on the EXO 3Cs, and my extensive time on the 2-Ply 3Cs, the EXO's would appear to be much less sticky than the 2-ply 3C's for whatever reason…

I find Super Tackys transmit a fair bit less HF trail buzz than 3C's. I think the sidewalks might be stiffer on the latter? I like an ST front and a 60a rear.

The EXO's use different compounds than the 2 ply.

EXO 3C is 70 base/60 center/50 edge
2-ply 3C is 70/42/40
ST is… 42/42/42
Sidewalls are the same on 2-ply ST and 2-ply 3C. The ST UST tubless ones have the stiffer sidewalls.

So with the higher durometer rubber in the EXO 3Cs, thereby being "less grippy" than the regular 3Cs, what would be the main advantage of the EXO 3Cs over the 3Cs?

less weight.

… And less rolling resistance.

Yes I suppose, but it seems a little silly to talking rolling resistance with a 2.5 dhf of any compound. :)
