29er tires

I am looking to be on a 29er soon and am looking at tires…trying to figure out what to put on the new ride.

To give you a little context, I really love DHF's, been running a crossmark on the rear all summer and it's ok, but would like a little more downhill/cornering traction….any ideas on what 29er tire would work best for winter riding on the island?

I too had a soft spot for the DHF on my 26er. I'm on the island and have been running an Ardent 2.4 up front and Ignitor 2.1 out back. Tubed and tubeless. Seems to get the job done. I'll probably try the Purgatory/Captain combo when I wear the Maxxis pair out.

DHF 29x2.5 front and a Ardent 29x2.4 rear will be the end-all 29er combo for me once the former hits stores. Would love to put those on a Bandit 29 with Fox 34. Mmm.

Either going to run the Ardent 2.4 up front with something else out back or those specialized tires.

By summer some more options should be ready

I've been on the Bontrager Team Issue 29-4 tires for half a dozen rides now, big difference over the Ardents. On the back it's way more stable and doesn't break loose as easily as the Ardent. Cornering is very good. They're 2.3, good volume and decent size knobs. I've been running them at about 30psi with tubes and no pinch flats yet. At 810grams is a reasonable weight as well.

i've put in a lot of miles on the wolverines (lived in the states then, rode them almost exclusively on front wheels for five years). i'd disagree that they are fast rolling, but they were excellent tires. i wasn't able to find them when I moved to North Van so I haven't used them for a few years.

strike the previous sentences. I rode weirwolves not wolverines. tread and compounds look similar though.

Not a well liked tire. Plastic rubber, useless sidewalls, average all-rounder (neither good nor bad at anything).

Has anyone tried out the Schwalbe Hans Dampf 29ers? Thinking about throwing them on the new ride.

Whats the differance between their PaceStar and TrailStar compounds?

I like it better as a 29er than a 26er tire. It's also about as soft as they get for wagon wheels at the moment.

hans dampf looks mildly intriguing, though the name is annoying.
in typical german fashion they have completely random naming schemes for their rubber blends.
pacestar is plastic, nice and fast for dry conditions, hopeless on wet roots/rock.
trailstar is in between, and vertstar is stickiest.

i'd ride a panaracer rampage (with regular rubber) before a nevegal. if panaracer made an "SC" version of the 29er rampage, this thread wouldn't exist. same goes for high roller, minion, or butcher.

I did not know there was a 29er Hans Dampf. I have the 26 X 2.35 on my Blur and they are excellent. I think it is the softer rubber because they grip really well. I hear you on the lame German tire names. At least with the Hansy, you can pump it up! Do not be a mousey man.
