27.5 Rims - Help me decide

I have not been keeping up on the specs of rims latley.

I just jumped on the 27.5 bandwagon. I have a set of 27.5 wheels that are narrow and somewhat heavy that I'll keep as back-ups or throw on a Hard Tail if I ever decide to get one again.

I have a set of 32H Chris King hubs that I plan on using to for this wheel build.

I'd like to keep the total cost for rims/spokes/nipples under $300 but I am flexible. (I will build them myself) I'd like to keep the build reasonably light [HTML_REMOVED]1800g. I will ride them reasonably hard, but the bike they will be going on will not likely be jumped much, just ridden hard on all the local (lower mainland) trails.

I will be running 2.3" - 2.4" tubeless tires.

I would like to run wideish rims. I currently have Stans Flows on my Trail and DH bike an like them a lot. Wider might be better. I am looking for a relaible build. As an example I build my last set of wheels DT5.1 on Kings with DT Competition spokes that have lasted since 2007. I trued and tensioned them myself and they have stood the test of time. I expect the same from this build. I am tempted by carbon, but I am still on the fence (I can be convinced).

Any suggestions on rims/spokes/nipples that fit my criteria?

  • [HTML_REMOVED]1800g
  • [HTML_REMOVED]$300
  • wide / wideish
  • available locally or easy to order
  • reliable / durable
  • tubeless compatible

These wheels will be going on a Banshee Rune.

Don't decent spokes add up to about or over $ 200 all on their own? Hopefully I'm wrong, its been a couple years since I had some wheels built.

dt swiss' ex rims, stan's flow ex and wtb's i25 would all seem to fit the bill. they're all quite close in weight (~500 grams), width (25mm inner/29mm outer) and price (just [HTML_REMOVED] $100/rim)

edit: $200 for 2 wheels worth of spokes? jesus. i thought i was happy using straight guage simply because they made for a stiffer wheels and were easier to build. add way better value to the list

Budget is pretty low.. $500-600 for a self build is more realistic.

Thanks Boom. I had not looked at DT for quite some time. The EX471 looks rather nice.

What if my budget was $400?? rims/spokes/nipples

Remember that I already have the hubs.

Pacenti rims are really good. I have the cl25 and if I remember correctly less than 100$ a rim and only 50 grams heavier then comparable Enve rim at 1000$

Who caries Pacenti? Are they an order through the shop type item or am I better off gettign them online? - sorry about all the questions, but I'd rather get the real goods for those that have ridden these wheels. (thanks in advance)

I will likely go DT Revolution spokes but can't decide if I'll go brass or aluminum nips.

i got my set last year through renegade cycle supply on the island http://www.r-c-s.ca/

but i don't think they are carrying them anymore. you can buy them direct from pacenti: http://pacenticycledesign.com/index.php/products/rims

i had the tl28's - they seemed too good (wide and light) to be true, and they were: i'm not a bruiser but i thrashed those rims in less than a year

Been riding mine for 2 years and they run great. I do ride them for racing and xc only (does nimby count?) but I ride them fairly hard. I'm 155 lbs and fairly smooth rider tho. How heavy are you?
