I was finally able to put together my Stooge Scrambler downgravelventure bike on Saturday, and get it out for a couple forest road spins. It's a lot of fun. Much more confidence-inspiring than the Warakin, I'm no longer concerned about not seeing a pothole and going ass over teakettle. I really like the upright position, but I don't know how I feel about the 165mm cranks. I wanted to try them for additional ground clearance and maybe some knee benefits, but it feels like they're straining my quads, right above the knee, more than my usual 175s. Definitely more noticeable than I thought it would be.
I might try going even higher bars when the Discord Chromo Peeper stems come back in stock. If I switch back to 175mm cranks, I'll be lowering my saddle 10mm too, so that'll also make the bars effectively higher. It's still in the hoods-primary range right now. The drops are totally usable, but don't seem as high as they would be on a Tanglefoot.
Drop bar dropper is stupid and fun. I'm using the PRO drop bar dropper remote and it's... ok. It's got two levers, you're supposed to be able to pull from the hoods or push from the drops. Pulling from the hoods with my index finger is no problem, but you need fingers of steel to push from the drops, it's damn hard. I think the lever isn't long enough. I'll try it for a while, and may eventually swap to a Wolf Tooth lever next to the stem, since I can't really use the dropper on the fly from the drops anyways.
Mudhuggers are great. Rock solid, installation was easy, and I got filthy the first ride without 'em.
A very short stem with drop bars and a 67° head angle doesn't feel weird at all. Climbs just fine, you do have to weight the front a bit though. Conversely, it's relatively easy to pop the front end up over rocks/roots/logs.
I'm signed up for a couple races while I'm in Europe - Grinduro Germany, (hopefully) Dead Ends & Dolci/Cake, the North Wales 400. I think this will be my weapon of choice.
^my kind of "gravel."
