1.5" Hitch mount rack for 2.5 bikes?

My little guy is growing, and his next bike won't fit in the trunk anymore. So that means that the Yakima Holdup won't be enough for this family's bike trips, of which there are a lot.

I'd rather stay away from the style that attaches at the top tube, and prefer the wheel mounts for their low profile and universality. The third bike will be a 20" kid's bike, so weight shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Any suggestions, or do I have to go back to a roof rack?

For most 4 bike racks a 2" hitch is recommended but as long as his bike is small there shouldn't be a huge issue.

My ghetto setup I have a cheap hatchback rack and a wheel mount 2 bike hitch rack. The hitch racks extends out far enough from the back of the car thet I can fit 1-2 bikes on the hatchback rack. It ain't pretty but gets the job done

Not sure how thule does it now…But you used to be able to buy additional bike mounts that would just slide in the back in the Sportsworks days. With a light bike, you could probably get away with 3 on a 1.5…but they might not sell them individually.

The 1-1/4" Yakima Holdup 2 is not expandable beyond 2 bikes, as those hitches are not designed to carry heavy loads. You might be able to hack something together, though. I recently saw a neat hack where a guy cut the second tray off his Holdup and then modified it to slide back in when needed.

^yeah, i wouldn't want to load a 1 1/4" with any more than 2 bikes. we were faced with a similar scenario, and opted to toss on a roof rack to carry the 20"er.

Holdup 2 in the smaller size (1 1/4") isn't compatible with the add on +2 bike section.

These racks rock! http://www.1upusa.com/. I have one on my WRX and I carry 3 bikes on it all the time. Fits all tire sizes. Definitely on the pricey side but they have a lifetime warranty. You'd be lucky to get 10+ years out of a Yakima or Thule.
