i'm also trying dropping the 11t cog (that i never use on trail; guess i'm that slow) instead of the 17t, so i've got a properly stepped 13-42 cassette.

ok; found a random 16t cog in my tickle trunk of junk, so kept my 11t cog (ie, 11-13-16-19…). just for you, sethimus. using the second position 13t cog in 1st position isn't a great idea anyways, as it's catching very little spline. probably would have sheared off my aluminum freehub body in time…

also spaced my chainring inboard a bit further (moreso than the already offset wolftooth 30t). the crossover to the 42 was pretty gnarly; figured i'd try to mitigate wear a little.

I found a 16t in my spares bin as well. It is likely from an 8 or 9 speed cassette.

What speed cassette was your 16t from and does it work well?

I considered losing the 11 instead of the 16 for the same reasons. The main reason to keep the 11 is that it's knurled and provides the necessary bite for the lockring. Now if someone made a knurled 13t cog to replace the 11 then we'd be in business, a ridiculous early adopter business.

They do make one. Just not in MTB flavour it appears.

Absolute Black indicate they will be producing a threaded 13 tooth cog. Not sure when, but the idea is to provide that option to those that purchase their 40t or 42t pizza cutter.

then you could run 64bcd rings even better it you like the chainline more inboard and you could get your 26t chainring

mine was from an old xt 9 speed. it's .2mm thicker, but doesn't seem to have an averse affect on shifting performance.

was about to say - miche makes 1st position cogs in a variety of sizes. I've also seen individual 16t 10 speed cogs from them as well. should be easy enough to track down.

so the gc works pretty slick on trail. as mentioned previously, I spaced the middle ring inboard so the chainline is square in the middle of the cassette. the xt midcage seems pretty happy in every position; I used the longer b screw, but am using just a small amount of extra extension over the stock unit, so chain wrap [HTML_REMOVED] shifting is fine in the small cogs. an effective and (relatively) cheap solution. I like it.

^^^^much better plan than those over things. This probably won't destroy your alloy free hub.

The key will be how well it shifts. I found the similar General Lee adapter was horrendous on and off the carrier.

my xt cassette + wolftooth gc shifts just dandy, for the combined price of $150. so there's that. it's a wide cog; i don't foresee cassette deformation issues (i'm running an aluminum freehub), but time will tell of course.
