Question: I'm waiting for my 42 tooth cog so in the meantime my 30 tooth fat/thin ring is making me work and wish for a lighter gearing. I'd like to run a granny ring at least for now however the fat/thin ring has built in spacers on the mount holes which push it into the granny ring. Long story short, can I grind off the "spacers" on the fat/thin ring to allow me to run a granny? I can choose then to run the chain on either (no front derailer, I'd hand place the chain). Or are the "spacers" required for some reason? I can only guess it's for a better chainline but can't imagine it making a huge difference.
11spd Experiments
The spacers allow the chain to not foul the spider. You cannot fit the 30t ring on the 104bcd spider without spacing it away.
You need the spacers so the chain does ride on the crank tabs. You might be able to fit a 22 or 24 with small spacers. Just enough that the chain will clear the 30. But really you will only use that granny in the two lowest cogs and maybe third down. Can't hurt to try it and see.
Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.
Thanx guys, makes sense. I'll try spacing out a granny ring to see how that goes. Hope my 42 cog comes soon! Figured even if this doesn't work for me (single ring idea) it's cool to test it out and I can always run it on my other bike.
By the way - I upgrade to a 10 speed clutch derailer system recently and I had no idea that the clutch d was going to be so good.
got my wolftooth gc a couple days ago. looks nice enough. bit of a tight fit on my dt freehub body though. picking up a mid-cage xt today to finish a proper install. the zee will shift up there, but doesn't have enough range to accommodate suspension chain growth. i'm also trying dropping the 11t cog (that i never use on trail; guess i'm that slow) instead of the 17t, so i've got a properly stepped 13-42 cassette.

so you start with a cassette with 327% bandwidth, remove the 11t cog, add a 42t cog and then get just 323% bandwidth, but a way heavier cassette…
why?
just use your normal 11-36 cassette with a smaller ring in front, same effect…
in this case, 30t 13-42 vs. 26t 11-36
why?
because no one makes a 26t narrow wide ring? i'm fine with the range for what i'm riding; i just wanted a bailout gear for the occasional tech death grind. i never use the 11t, but sometimes want one more cog on the big end; seems like a reasonable solution, no?
I wanted a 28 tooth narrow wide ring but with 104bcd which of course can't exist. Is there is only the SRAM crank (XX1) that can run a 28 tooth narrow/wide ring? I'm sure it's a great crank but I want a standard axle width to fit my CK BB. I won't use any other BB as in the past all brands I've had lasted between 6mos and 1yr while my CK BB keeps going (as long as I keep it greased) and the 5yr warranty shows they were serious.

Different trails, different styles.
IMO 26t would probably compromise suspension performance, and increase chain wear, and has not N/W chainring availability.
Most of what i ride, i get going fast enough just by getting off the brakes for a couple of seconds, not pedalling.
I definitely considered a 13t top gear, and may end up with that - i'm fitting the 16t solution today as the 15[HTML_REMOVED]19t jump IS annoying and trail affecting IMO.
42t :rave:

There's an XX1 that works with standard BB's. I'm running that on my Highball with CK BB. You do need a shim kit but that came with the CK BB when I bought it last Spring.

Got granny tabs? Then in theory you can get a 28t or less NW 64BCD ring. These guys list it but its not in the drop down menu. Maybe email. Nearly identical gear range to a traditional 2x system.

or there's always the spline mount Next SL cranks, so nice
Giant Cog!

There is also a B-Screw in the package
Why slag free swag?
ummm, as your doctor i recommend against riding with a scaphoid fracture.

then i need to buy some pricey cranks. the idea is to get this done on the cheap with an existing drivetrain.
Just installed my wolftooth and everything seems good. It shifts up and down really well and the chainline looks really good. But if I back pedal the chain comes off. It only happens on the 42T… Anyone else having this issue? I'm not sure if it's a big deal on the trail but kind of weird. BTW everything is new, ring, gears, chain, derailleur.
