This is my first season on 10 speed and after measuring today it looks like I'm due for my first chain replacement. The bike is a Norco Range with a KMC X10 chain, about 6 months old.

I'm used to getting a year or more out of my 9 speed chains on my freeride/all-mountain bike (usually a Sram 950 or 970).

Not sure if 10 speed just wears out quicker or if going with a Sram (or Shimano) replacement will last longer.

Any thoughts?

I get about a year outta my 9spd sram chains as well. Maybe throw a sram on there [HTML_REMOVED] see how it holds up. Its a difficult one to compare though because there are so many other variables that come into play (ie. conditions, maint, etc).

I've had the best luck with KMC chains.. both 9 and 10 speed.

I tend to replace mine chain twice a year no matter what. Could probably do it more. Just depends on how many hours your bike gets.

Ya, true enough guys. I ride twice a week on average and am pretty good about cleaning and maintenance. Neither of those have really changed since I got the new bike though.

Anyways I'm leaning towards going with Sram just because that would match all of the other drivetrain bits. We'll see if it holds up any better.

It depends a lot on the chain lube. I use pro link and my chains last over a year

If the chain's wore out how's the cluster?

If worn, buy a new one or maybe just the worn cogs and two chains which you then swap back and forth after "X" amount of service hours (time sensative like).

Extends the life of entire drivetrain. Buy a new small ring if you're anal that way.
