The way to run one bike is to just ride all the awesome AM trails.

Get invited to Whistler for a park day? Decline the offer then go ride the valley trails.

Get invited to Pemby to shuttle? Decline the offer and pedal up Nimby to Middle Earth.

Just sever off riding with the guys that only ride DH bikes.

If you only ride with a group that are always on AM missions then it's easy. Gets harder when you start craving a park day of shredding. Sure DH tires and putting a coil on will make it more enjoyable, but you won't be hanging with a group that are hammering it on full DH bikes.

All comes down to self control.

If it's an experiment, to see if a Big Bike guy can survive and be happy in the AM bike world that's a whole other story.

Hmmmm - living a 20 minute drive from a bike park rules this out…plus the fact that I like to race DH…

Three bikes is good - two is doable - one can be painful…too much compromise

You have made riding a priority in life. Why short change it and have only one bike to do it all? BTW, you've got a pretty good work and life schedule.

I used to always have two bikes, but now I am down to a one pony stable. One dual suspension bike that is good enough for the shore and Whistler, but is too sluggish to ride XC or dirt jump. I have an itch to build up another hardtail, but realistically riding it 3-4 times a month doesn't really work out in my books.

ha. I just have a girlfriend who admits riding bikes is a way healthier diversion than being at the pub every night.

You can all go to hell. I'll be joining you shortly and I'm bringing beer and cheetos.

Double wrong. My little lady would rather me look at bike mags than porn mags, be out riding than at the bar, and pedalling my ass off instead of on the couch getting fat although she does say it borders obsession. I can't speak for all the other girlfriends/wives out there though…….

Shed head!

This.
Running one bike, you will always compromise something, so rather than compromise what you are comfortable doing on a bike, why not compromise trail selection for the bike.
I know that if I had to choose between taking out the big bike for a rip, or taking the AM bike out, the AM will always win, and it's very different trails that I will be riding, but it's a compromise that I'm happy to make.

wanting to ride a certain type of trail is cool and if you only like a certain bike thats cool too, but not riding certain trails cause you don't have the right type of bike…..well that would just plan suck.

compromise riding areas due to the type of bike you own……please ape do not follow this advice, or anyone for that matter.

frack if i owned a clapped out old hardtail, because thats all i could afford, i would still ride all the places i do

I really only ride one style of trail, mostly in one place, and I wouldn't just have one bike. This is crazy talk.

Delirium for 80% of my riding. A small as-yet-undetermined pedaller for purer XC. Then an inexpensiver/used DH bike purely for park thrashing.

I can get by on just my Delirium, but on pure XC it feels a bit excessive and in the park I'm always wishing for a bit more travel, DH tires, etc. In the lower mainland you really need three bikes (pedal, shore, shuttle).

There's nothing better than an Orangina after cheating death with Digger.

As long as you accept that you won't be the first guy to the top of the hill, or the fastest to the bottom (freakish rider skill aside) it shouldn't be a problem.

I have started to pedal more, so I'll most likely get an xc bike to go along with my AM bike, because a 30+ lbs Nomad isn't a fun rig to push 'round with the spandex drowd.

Why slag free swag?

ummm, as your doctor i recommend against riding with a scaphoid fracture.

Yes a moto is the best replacement for a DH bike.

You get 10000% more seat time in a moto day than you would on a DH day (shuttle or park) and the moto is fun going up and down and across.

Also if you are someone that has rode most all the DH trails in southern BC it opens up a whole new world of exploration.
