..the difference is the consequences: scratched fender vs eating-your-meals-through-a-straw / need-help-putting-on-your-pants-for-the-next-year / dead.
I believe these things can occur to both motorists and cyclists.
Out of all of my friends from childhood three have died on roads and all of them were driving cars when it happened.
Some see a car as protection. I see it as a metal box that can potentially be crushed and then catch fire with the people trapped inside. Whereas I have been struck by cars while cycling four times and I'm not even paralyzed or anything.
