So, how do we feel about Ken Sim closing down the Beach Ave bike lane as a cherry on the Stanley Park pie?

Thanks for posting. Sim sees himself as an avid cyclist. My ass.

That sucks.  Rode that recently with my daughter.  Great way to spend a sunny day downtown.

I use that bike route for commuting every day.  I won't likely use an off-street bike path so I will end up riding in traffic if the bike lane goes away. I don't see how mixing bikes and cars on a busy street is good for anyone.

Agreed.

Surely the answer is to route car traffic heading into the park via Nelson St? I'm not even sure whether that is possible already or whether it's one way/residents only.

I presume Sim has many supporters in that area of the West End...

I have dug into this a bit since I read your initial post. I think it's important to clarify that the proposal isn't to remove the bike lane from Beach Ave, but to move it onto the adjacent park land (for the bargain basement price of 6 million).  It's hard to envision how this would look. I agree that it's still worth protesting, but I think the message would be stronger if Critical Mass added this point of clarification to the protest. I'm still planning to attend.

OTOH, maybe it's misinformation on Instagram.  Who do you believe?

Type of feedback:

Feedback on an upcoming Council meeting agenda item

Agenda item name:

Position:

Support

Provide details:

The Beach Ave permanent separated bike lane is a critical piece of safety and traffic reduction infrastructure.

I live in North Vancouver, and safely commute by bicycle via Spirit Trail, Lions Gate, Beach Ave, Burrard Bridge and Arbutus to my office in South Vancouver. I frequently stop for a snack or drink in Vancouver, which I don't do when driving.

That takes one car off the road, every time I pedal instead of drive. The Beach Ave Bike lane section is key, and very well used. Closing it would mean rededicating Stanley Park paved paths as multiuse, which is almost as dangerous as having roads multiuse (except bike-car collisions are deadly).

Please keep Beach Ave Safe for Vulnerable Road Users. Keep or improve the separated bike lane.

Thank you!

pheu!  Me too.  Thankfully I found the presentation to council, which looks a heck of a lot better, and I support it, rather than protesting.

and oddly enough, the feedback form kept giving me an error when listing "I don't live in Vancouver".  Had to select Unknown Vancouver neighborhood to submit it.

It is my understanding from the May 8th meeting minutes that the council will not approve the "Imagine West End Waterfront Vision" and further want to spend 6 million to move the Beach Ave bike lane onto park land to allow for two way vehicle traffic. I think there are many reasons to oppose the latter point.

I don't care where the bike lane is, as long as it's separate and protected from cars and pedestrians and lets me scoot past idling traffic.
