Shame to hear about the QC Track being crap. It was mint 2 day rip with an overnight hostel stay in 2001. Oh well, that's progress.

I did some trail building at Makara Peak just outside Wellington with the Kennet brothers (have their book too, even though I'm now on the wrong side of the Pacific), very friendly bunch. If you're ever in Wellington, you can make a good 3-4h singletrack heavy ride there and it's all well sign posted.
