the point of pre-ordering a file to download totally eludes me. is it a peace of mind thing? status? concerned itunes will run out of copies?

I get it without much mental strain. If you know you are going to do something in the future, why not get it done when you have a free moment? One less thing to deal with. It's not like the interest on 9.99 is going to be a deal breaker either. Also you don't need to keep checking to see when it's available.
