Sam Brown's Story on The Fifth Estate

The DEA is dead against Pot.

My dad is a retired Metro Toronto Police Office and had to deal with them on some occasions and they are hardliners.

Even he couldn't understand how so much cocaine floated around and they seemed to over look that, but get caught with pot… Wow!

There was no telling what they would do.

Unfortunately we will never know what happened during his time in the jail. Pretty bad I imagine considered he took his own life.

so embarrassed that he got caught and was looking at a long jail sentence?

Then I wouldn't recommend you get into trafficking drugs to the US.

He took drugs into the US, knowing that the US doesn't like that and he would go
to jail for a long time if caught.

He was too embarrassed to call his family to let them know what he did.

He either:
-couldn't handle the "thougth" of being in jail for a decade
-couldn't bear the thought of being in a small cell for years
-got so claustrophobic being in that cell for what a week
…that he hung himself.

I may not agree with the US drug policy, and he was a talented kid, but he screwed
up and couldn't handle going/being in jail.

It's a sad, sad story and I feel for his family, but he knew what he was doing.

You keep your mouth shut and no one gets hurt? My dad never had any issues
when he got out, he'd just get right back into it a couple years later.
If anything, he's the one that got ratted out.

This is a unfortunate story of how not to live your life.

That 5th estate piece was one of the most heavy-handed, sensationalist reports I have seen outside of CNN. It had a manufactured and leading tone with questions on both sides of the argument which had me doubting the broadcasts credibility. The rolling stone piece was more artfully done if not more insightful as well.

I agree with the mess with the bull sentiment but can't help but sympathize with his family.

I was young and taking on huge risk in criminal activity way back once upon a time.
Immaturity will have you feeling invincible…"it won't happen to me"…"I'm smarter than that"…"OK, I got caught last time, now I know how to do it better, I won't get caught again" …so you write off the consequences and keep them from your mind. Cuz you're not going to get caught, no way…right?!
I can imagine how a guy could get carried away and before you know it, you're consequence level has risen WAY high…but you haven't been thinking about it…but there you are.
I get the impression Sam was never in law trouble before? Going from zero to lookng at 5yrs prison is a HUGE step. That'd be a big pill to swallow for a kid who wasn't looking beyond tomorrow.
Very sad he got suicidal over it.

You thought the 5th estate piece was sensational and the RS article was arty and insightful??? I'm not sticking up for the 5th estate piece in any way shape or form - but that Rolling Stone article was one of the most sensationalized, over the top, articles I've read in a long time - maybe since this;
