Readers' Rides #19
Nice Readers Ride - like the history.
great story.
I love the seat post pic. I miss those seats too.
Enjoyably written.
A proper single speed ring, and a decent quality cog (Surly, WTB, King etc) will end the chain drop-age.
I set my Berg up singlespeed the same way (same magic gear too) and anything to avoid a tensioner is a good call.
Although, Phil Wood is now making an eccentric BB that is very trick looking.

Nice work Boom! I enjoyed that article.
Awesome, that bike has got some character.
Nice frugal ride. I'm still rocking my 15 year old expresso (sturdier version of the sovereign). My wife calls me cheap but I like to think of it as resourceful ; )
I didn't know you'd be riding OFF ROAD with those brakes!

LOL.
*During a Halloween party 5 years later, the same guy pulled out an adjustable wrench and a bin of kickstands and installed one on every fixie parked within walking distance of the shop [HTML_REMOVED]#8211; and again, he professed to have no memory of the installation.
Great article, but that one line above is funny as
i'd be stoked if someone installed a kick-stand on my fixie…ironic hipster points galore.
That's it, buddy: next time I see the Samurai with a severely out-of-tension rear wheel, I'm not lending you my spoke wrench.
you know i was only riding it that day out of necessity

yeah the idea was to try it out, and if i liked it drop the coin on proper gear. but for about the price of "the right" single speed bits i can get a full rack of gears. that philcentric bb is pretty tempting, though

i'd understood the expresso was the slightly-lower-end model. if you have more details on these frames i'm very interested

i consider myself to have been fairly warned wayne

Great article and I can vouch for all the OCB ephemera.
My observation: Omar's new years resolution should be to invest some time and money into a pair of flat pedals! I've had zero issues with my syncros magnesium meat hooks after three hard years of riding!
