I have a similar project bike, a '95 Kona HOT, also repainted by Dekerf a few years back. It is a lot of fun to ride, and I use it primarily as a 'super-commuter' that allows me to take shortcuts, trails, whatever. These old retro XC rigs open up a lot of riding options and I figure everyone should get one for the quiver.

fyp, Nice rig.
I just got a Dekerf built Surface and love staring at that paint and welds. True Craftsmanship.
I've been told some funny stories about dekerf tig welding waaaay back in his early days with Rocky
He just laughed and said his FS 29'r Specialized was 37 pounds. He wanderd off saying that maybe it was time to simplify again.
is this a typo or is he running lead in his tires?
Just a speculative fiction. No cause for alarm.
My '96/'97 Team ST was that same orange colour. It was the only bike I ever owned that I couldn't ride hands free. Mine was definitely an odd rig; some bike thief out there may still have a piece of early MTB'ing art…

Faint praise….
Freedom of contract. We sell them guns that kill them; they sell us drugs that kill us.

Part of the "art" vs. "science". When robots get it wrong they get it wrong on everything. When it's handmade you roll the dice every time. The better the builder, the better your odds. However, humans are never 100%.
so nice
