My 02 Balfa Minuteman, complete with Hayes Comp brakes and North Shore XS cranks. If I could afford it, I'd love to update things and make it a smooth operator again. It's not much of a pedal-able bike though.

I'm into my steel hardtail this year too, but like you said…pick your battles. I find if I ride the same trails as my fully, I'm just disappointed, but for just having some fun on the singletrack it's been a ton of fun.
I have a steel Rocky Mtn Vertex (1992 I think) tucked away waiting for me to drop off to Chris Dekerf. Problem with this frame is that it's a 1" head tube. Can you guys point me in the right direction to get a modern day fork that has a 1" steer tube? 2 yrs ago Marzocchi made some but have since discontinued production.

I love the modern day build on the classic frame Cam. I've kept my Team SL with a more retro build, but toying with the idea of hunting down a Team ST frame with up to date parts for the next project or just swapping parts over from the current steed.
As far as I know, all steel DK's used 27.2 seatpost.

i love the spirit behind this build, but the fork just kills it for me. sticking a long fork on a svelte xc hardtail hearkens back to the mid-1990's when there were few other options - doing so now just seems misguided
One thing about your bb height comment and comparing it to chromag, I always found that chromag has really low bb compared to others.

I guess it depends how and where you ride. I had a lumberjack (same geo as the chromag) and found that it sat a bit to low on some trails (rocky natural type) On the other hand on buffed out manicured type trails with berms and jumps it felt really good. But as an allrounder felt that it was a bit to low for me on most trails I ride and now ride a secret bike.;)

I don't like the slacked out seat angle. I think the bike looks sweet, but would have been nicer with a smaller fork - I know the TALAS can drop, but still.
