It seems like everyone and their dog headed up the Mamquam to check out the opening of Full Nelson on Saturday.

That thing was pretty fun, I have to admit! No replacement for suspension though…
Indeed, the trail is certainly not an extension. Not sure why it was ever described that way; pretty misleading.
It was pretty awesome to see our little town explode with excitement for reasons other than Lycra induced cramp fests. Hopefully the success makes it clear to the district that this sport is worth investing in. Sunday was still really busy on the trails and I met some great new people and had the best day I've had all year. So far…
"We were a bit surprised to find out that Full Nelson was not actually an extension to the top of Half Nelson, but an alternate option for the top half of the descent that leads into Half Nelson just under Angry Midget."
Huh. That is surprising, as that was the impression I had, too. So where is the access to Full Nelson now? Same fireroad as Half Nelson?
You could access it by continuing on the FSR past HN and AM. A quicker push would be to go just past the bottom of HN and there is an FSR on your left with a stop sign on it. Just follow that and keep left at any junctions. Alternatively you can ride Cakewalk, and take the right hand line near the end of it which will get you half way up the climb. Or you could ride One Trick Pony if you're feeling sassy and that takes you pretty much right there.
yeah, i think it is actually shorter than Half Nelson was going by the strava distance and times. I thought it was going to be like Half Nelson but from the top parking lot :( still tons of fun though.
I wouldn't hold your breathe on it connecting to the upper road…two issues; BC Parks (although I'm sure that could ultimately be dealt with), and maintenance from massive shuttle usage that SORCA is likely unwilling to sign on to.
If you are taking that right at the bottom of Cakewalk, exercise EXTREME CAUTION on the rickety old bridge that you cross in that direction. It's a 15-20 foot drop onto wet rocks, with some dodgy rungs and mobile stringers. Probably best to have only one person at a time on it, off the bike for good measure. Careful if you have cleats, it would be so easy to skate off the wood into the void. I can hardly understand how they spend so much time on the pump track, and leave that death trap still standing. Hopefully that gets addressed before someone gets crippled.
To clarify what Kram is suggesting, instead of turning left off Ring Creek and proceeding past Pseudo Tsuga and the SORCA shleter to the traditional HN or AM climb, you could continue on the Ring Creek Main for a few hundred metres past the HN bottom parking area, and then take a spur road to the left. Again, keep to the left as you go up the spur, probably 10-15 minute push (although totally pedallable) and eventually you will see a trail entrance on your left. There was a curious lack of signage when I was there, but the trail is super obvious machine built type thing, can't miss it.
Great event on the weekend though. Agreed, the trail was not quite what was expected (shorter, and access was a bit hmm?), but the event and the sponsors were top notch. Any time you get 8 year olds riding down the trail with the 20-60 crowd, it's a win for the MTB community. Huge thanks to the Giant crowd that was running both their brand new truck with a rack, and the super Sprinter that packed 16 people and bikes. I'm sure their upholstery will never smell the same again.
The last thing Squamish needs is more shuttle traffic from out of towners. I think the locals account for a a very small % of the current vehicle traffic up there.
I hope they keep building hike or pedal to trails!
Props.

I am not so good at returning PM's as some have noticed.

The climbing trail will hopefully encourage more people to pedal up. Can't really blame people for not wanting to pedal up the road, but the new trail will make the climb quite enjoyable when it's done.
I quite enjoyed my day on Saturday. I put in three laps of Full Nelson before finally looking for what I was expecting to be the "bottom half".
I quickly found out from a friendly group of locals that Half Nelson started just as high up, if not higher, than Full Nelson and they told me about all the other cool trails running through those woods.
Two laps of Half Nelson, one more lap of full Nelson with Morgan and Jason, and a ride down Pseuda Tsuga had me complete one of the longest days of riding I've done in a while.
I'm really glad I had just bought an Enduro and decided to bring it out despite the "free shuttle's" being offered. I will definitely be going back to check out all the other trails I saw and do a few more laps of Full and Half Nelson.
I had a great time - I did 3 laps before the crowds (and mud) started getting thick. Thanks for setting it up. And thanks to the Red Bull truck for blasting Beastie Boys all day long!
"We are all out playing with our toys, having a good time. Try smiling the next time you see something that ruffles your keen aesthetic nerves and you might just make a new friend instead of killing that good riding buzz."

Alos, I notice some photographers on the trail - are you going to post all the pics?

So it's ok for locals to shuttle but not "out of towners" ?
