The reason MEC was started compared to what it has become is VERY DIFFERENT. Weather it is For Good or bad can be argued all day long. The Fact there concept has changed can not be argued though. It has become an outdoor superstore for the average Joe.

Yes REI is the same. I believe it was started by climbers as well.
