I don't understand why people get so bent out of shape when this topic pops up every few months. Knolly is responding to market demand - not that people are demanding their products be made in Taiwan, but that people want the best product. To get the best product you have to go where the best materials, best craftsmen, and cheapest labour are found. If that overall package were to be found here then no problem, but its not.
Remember when most things non bike related were made in the US? TV's, electronics, etc etc…. now we're in the big change over for high end bicycles. Even in the auto world, lots of high end parts and engines are being made in places like China. Once you see these developing nations become wealthier and their workers demanding higher wages, maybe you'll see these manufacturing jobs come back, but that probably wouldn't happen in our lifetimes.
Sign of the times we live in.
It is a sign, and it's a sign we have created ourselves. By demanding the best possible price on an item, we forced business overseas where labour is cheaper, land is cheaper and there are corners potentially cut on environmental safety and worker safety/benefits, but ultimately, as these nations will develop, the product will start to increase in price and jobs locally will dwindle. Japan is already too expensive, and that was once a go to nation for manufacturing. Taiwan is getting to be more expensive, china is going to be cheap for a long time. The problem is now, to support the local economy, you are either buying craft items at a huge premium, or you are paying for the costs of the local manufacturing plant which is way higher than overseas manufacturing, and doesn't offer any improvement in quality (often the opposite)
It's a complicated problem, and it's one that we only ever seem to look at short term benefits for. As a consumer we have some control, but really, it shouldn't be the consumer that decides what happens, it should be controlled at a higher level, for long term benefits.
