So many keyboard warriors on social media talking up how would have beaten that guy down. These were 16 year old kids visiting Canada, and they (and their parents) should be so proud of how they handled this. Imagine how much worse this could have been if this had gotten more intense and physical, this seems like the kind of guy that isn't going to stop with just a little pushing and shoving.
Words to live by: never escalate a confrontation, especially with a psycho. As an example, I once was walking down the street in Vancouver and there was confrontation between someone with mental health issues that was clearly homeless and a bystander. The bystander was a normal sized dude, and the homeless guy was like 140 lbs and scrawny as hell. He quickly overpowered the bystander, and me and my buddy, both over 6" and over 200lbs jumped in. This homeless guy was fucked up strong, it took all three of us and a lot of wrestling to get him restrained until the cops came. It was insane, I could not believe how strong and crazy this guy was.
In situations like this, just swallow your pride and do whatever you can to avoid it getting physical. Some people carry knives and are more than willing to use them. And even if you lay a beat down on someone, how is that gonna look when three people beat the hell out of someone, regardless of whether they started it or not. We all have these ideas of justice porn, where someone gets what's coming to them, but the reality is that getting into a physical altercation with someone rarely ends well.
