Brit here as well - faff is “Fucking around on tedious, small stuff that is tiresome and irking to oneself and others within the radius” I have to do stuff that’s a faff at work and it ain’t fun. Whereas, whatever the word you’re looking for encompasses freeing up and removal of anal retentiveness. The “free” in “freeriding” I suppose.
