Gaiters - so hot in 1988! I have some long ones I used to wear for snowshoeing - too big for this application but the idea makes sense, except I don't like the thought of that 'bulk' around my ankles for pedaling.
True about the Five Tens, although you can use sizing and socks to pick your own insulation and if they're thin enough, that makes them more versatile across different temperatures.
