I install my push on grips dry, with an air gun, and use a clamp from a cheap set of lock on grips (just butting against the grip flange) to keep the push on grips from drifting narrower on the bar.

I love the bar plugs that are the type with a bolt and expanding wedge, for two reasons. One. I like laying my bike on the ground like a kid. Two. I screw in a tiny eye screw and stash stuff in my handlebar. The grips pictured are KHE MVP grips, RIP. It looks like the Velo mushroom grip and Redline Hex Pro grip comes with this same kind of bar plug.
