I read a very good (imo) book about how people tend to dig into their beliefs instead of being open to new information. Julia Galef's "The Scout Mindset." She talks a lot about why people get an idea set in their head and how you can be more open to admitting you're wrong and changing your opinions as you learn new things. For example, that you can maybe live with a tamping iron gone through your skull (I knew the tamping iron part, but I thought it was in the Grand Canyon!). The takeaway is pretty much "you're constantly exploring a new landscape and you should believe things that you see, not things that you want to be there." Since I read it, I've actively been trying to point out when I was wrong and why I updated my views.
