I haven’t yet had a pair of shorts suffer this fate but I can see how it could occur when precautions go unheeded   As hooks go, this one is as sturdy and well anchored as they come. The leather which secures it loops through and then overlaps upon itself by half an inch and is somehow bonded to itself so well it seems to be welded in place.  I’ll report any developments, hooked or otherwise, should they reveal themselves.
